Exploring Hollywood Cemetery - 9/27/12
This past class we explored around Hollywood Cemetery. Its a beautiful, eerie, and peaceful place. I loved getting the opportunity to just explore the grounds and soak up the small treasures that Richmond has to offer.
This is the Confederate Pyramid. It was probably my favorite landmark in the entire cemetery, mainly because of its size and looming structure. The pyramid's size almost surprises you as you walk towards it. I stood only to about 1 1/2 of the stones from the floor. Definitely a beautiful monument.
I've heard stories about this grave, so finding it in the mass that is Hollywood Cemetery was a treasure. Essentially, the grave is for a girl who passed many years ago at a young age. She would apparently see the same dog out front of a shop on her way to school, and pat it on the head everyday. When the girl deceased, the dog's owner made sure to include a statue of the dog, to watch over her grave. Rumors say this grave is haunted, but it was really quite pleasant in the daytime.
A beautiful view of the James River inside of the memorial for those who are cremated. The stain glass was lovely as well.
A random tombstone; "In the 26th year of his ace".
Another random, yet interesting tombstone. Set for both husband and wife, the Wong couple. Photographs of them were permanently placed on the tomb, and the writing was all in character. Very cool.
Overall, the Hollywood Cemetery is a lovely place. I highly recommend that you stop by and visit whenever you can!

Searching for my Major- Painting/Printmaking
Painting and Printmaking have always been something that I have been interested in, but I currently feel like I know too little to consider it as my major. I'm sincerely hoping that this will change soon!
Due to classes going on, I wasn't able to fully engross myself in the painting studios in the Main Arts building. I did, however, pop my head in and examine the class, people, and atmosphere for awhile.

A peak into one of the panting studios
Unlike the Sculpture department, I found the painting studios to be a bit more tidy in terms of work being left out and organization of materials. The students appeared to be painting a still life with objects that were white, or covered in white sheets. This made me think about the challenges that painting will hold, and yet, I realized that they would be wonderful learning opportunities.
The people in the studio seemed to be collect with their work; not a lot of talking was going on, and I noticed many people staring at the still life setup and then at their work, and then back again. It was almost a peaceful realm to observe.
Some paintings on the drying rack
Now that I have looked and examined the Painting/Printmaking department, I have more confident thoughts about this being my major.
Searching for my Major- Sculpture
Although I am still unsure of my top choice of major, I decided to visit the Sculpture department in the Main Arts building.
Sculpture is a newly introduced interest to me, but I find it interesting and full of opportunities to fully express myself. The sculpture department here at VCU is also full of these exciting opportunities.
Here is a photo I took of an open area in the sculpture department. (These open areas are rare to find.) The studio was quiet on the Wednesday evening, but the space was lively with half finished projects and remains of used materials. I enjoyed the messy atmosphere found all over; the scarps of steryofoam, many bits of sawdust piled on the floor, and projects left out for anyone to see.

I also found the working/storage space interesting. Each person has a locker, which is divided into 4 or so slots. Each slot is for a student. The area used by the student was their own miniature studio, which was personalized by them for their own use.
A peak inside a locker workspace
Overall, I found the area very interesting, and will seriously consider this as my major!
